For an extensive of discussion of "conservative fiction", including consideration of whether such a category can be meaningful, see this thread of the Political Conservatives Group at LibraryThing.

My own receommendations are the historical fiction of Mary Renault (on ancient Greece), Patrick O'Brien's series set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, and Michael Shaara's Killer Angels (about the battle of Gettysburg).

Yet another vein attempt @ reading a book, please supprize me w/ a response.

pg.192 "According to he Project for Excellence in Journalism, news coverage immediately fater the attacks was based on solid sources and hard facts, but soon slipped. Among the findings: the factual coverage dropped from 75% in Sep to 63% three months later; 82% of print acct were factual, compared w/ only 57% of the televised stories; AND THAT NEWS COVERAGE HEAVILY FAVORED AMERICAN AND BUSH ADMIN POLICY." (not c&p, bold my emp)

There is a great quote by Ted Koppel made @ 97' Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Awards ceremony (pg 190) but it is very long. He address how US news is worried about rating and revenue, "They are the fading lines between television news and entertainment", while a lot of international reporter risk life and limb (literally) to get the story that won't even be make the back page here n the US.

"According to Harper's magazine index, 88 nations got less than 10 min coverage on US network evening news in the 90'. Less than ten min of news coverage on multiple news shows over the course of ten years is abysmal. No wonder many Americans are oblivious to world events."
An excerpt from a Peter Arnett article Nov 98' AJR, tells of the heyday of Cronkite where >40% was international coverage while today it is in the 7-12% and dropping. Details of print news given by column inch comparison show a 23% drop in two decades.
I guess they fig the internet has the market kornered ;^(

Tragedy as license to abandon responsible journalism, is an reasonable description for emotion in the media. From JFK jr. to princess Di how many ways can human tragedy be described?
Rigoberta Menchu received a 92' Nobel peace prize for an autobiography, which has been required reading in some US colleges. In her account, she tells of having to work on a plantation as a child among other exploits by land owners.(no implications r meant by that) In reality her father was a land owner and she attended some of the finer schools in Guatemala. Her embellishments kept others w/ legitimate stories from recognition. The Nobel commission DID NOT relinquish the prize for non fiction.

Some may recall the stories of Kaycee Nicole &/or Anthony Godby Johnson which turned out to be a hoax. One of the common threads between them, once they were ferreted out, the perpetrator would claim "death threats" as an excuse not to allow a meeting. Some even stood by the stories because of internet contact w/ the perp. These cases did not draw Fed investigation due to <$1000 threshold.

Now, should we look to the future,
How usuper, congress, & the special interests are transforming... a slump into a crash, freedom into socialism, and disaster into a CATASTROPHE... and how to fight back (cover description) D. Morris & E. McGann (pgs350)

or the past.
The 9/11 Commission Report AUTHORIZED EDITION author makes no claim (pgs550)

I just picked up a copy of both, so unless someone want to do a read along it's gona be random.

PS still wrapping up MMm

It's not easy reading, but I am currently fascinated by this book:

Soft Despotism, Democracy's Drift: Montesquieu, Rousseau, Tocqueville, and the Modern Prospectt by
Paul A. Rahe

I never realized how much Montesquieu influenced Jefferson and the the other Founding Fathers and what an incredibly bright and insightful writer he was.

Just got through watching World News Tonight, not a single moment to address anything outside the USA. WTF, why even call it world news.

TY, for the post RoC. I think it was meant to be, as I saw JR posted on ur blog #/##. Will be posting there soon, hopefully. Be prepared, it can be a little upsetting when ur beliefs don't fit logic. Wish U woulda put more time n2 describing the book u read.

I finally wrapped up Media Mythmakers, one of if not the most informative book I have read.

EPA "requires" schools to clean up asbestos, only to make the problem worse by kicking up the asbestos debris. A good example of how the EPA pays big money to make a problem worse. Also addressed former gov Christine Todd Whitman of NJ wanting to out fit college dorms w/ sprinklers. And of course a NJ sen and some SOB sen named John Edwards from NC got leg for $500 million in grants to make this happen. When most people agreed that the money would have been better spent educating the kids not to ignore fire alarms. D@mn bastards always thinking they can spend money to solve all problems.

Under the chapter titled "Emotional Legislation", he delves into exploiting exploited children. It is absurd the crap legislation created in the name of "helping children". MFers like Janet Reno (criminal @large & former AG) consider children late for dinner to be part of the est 440,000 children that go missing each yr, what a crock. Stats show children are more likely to suffer from heart disease or even get struck by lightning than to be abducted by a stranger. Child abduction is a crime more likely to be committed by a female than a male.

A researcher named Richard Estes made exaggerated claims in 2001, on child safety. Yet a researcher who's work his claims are based on called him out as bogus. No credible publication was willing to publish his work, yet he wouldn't change his conclusions. Only a note that David Finkelhor, who's work Estes study was based on, objected to the findings.

An example case of how Megan's Law hindered investigators in the case of Xiana Fairchild abduction. Cases of vigilantes beating up mentally handicap people, because a sex offender gave their address as residence. These sex offender laws, over the top, cause more problems than they solve.

Rep. Nancy Johnson (CT) was pushing for legislation to protect children like Christina Long. Touting that she had been killed by an internet predator, yet the reality was Long was using the internet like a singles bar to hook up. It came to light that the 25yr old Brazilian had been friends w/ Long for several months before killing her. Not only Johnson failed to mention this when parading her bill, the bill would have made no difference what so ever in her case. We spend millions for the domain kid.us due to this nut of a rep.

Ever hear of the urban legend of razor blades in candy. Well it seems some police departments around the country X-ray halloween candy, even though THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A DOCUMENTED CASE.

Anthrax scare of 01'-02', uses to threaten senators who opposed the patriot act. US MILITARY GRADE BIO WEAPONS RESEARCH MATERIAL, ILLEGALLY MANUFACTURED AGAINST INTERNATIONAL TREATY. Said to be a strong factor in the passing of the patriot act.

Remember the black church burnings in the mid 90's? Well addressed in this book. Most were serial arsonist, most were juvenile, and at least one was set by the pastor to collect insurance in KY.

He covers how members of that d@mn bas association extorted corning over breast implants, Maury Povich is a real scaremonger, using a mentally unstable woman who cut out her own implants form media hype/fear. How those same bastards exacerbated the Norplant (birth control) scare. U can thank these SOBs for taking that product off the market. Some women claimed the product so convenient as to put up w/ side effects. England love the product but the media hype put an end to that.

Geraldo Rivera's Devil-Worship: Exposing Satan's Underground on NBC created another urban legend. Even though no documented cases were avb to back his claims. Lauren Stratford ran w/ it writing a book "Satan's Underground" where she made elaborate claims which were proven to only be in her imagination. She later changed her name and wrote a book claiming to be a holocaust survivor. There are several cases posted of how this scare resulted in numerous people being falsely charged based on children's elaborate lies, some never exanurated.

One of the biggest problems we face is emotion in media. Saw dr fill today making an emotional plea to the morons who watch his show, after a list of requested item, CASH (go to the dr fill site and donate cash, BS) please ignore that dumb SOB, I was n a waiting room. would never watch him on purpose.

May just continue my post on goldwater as no1 wants to post here.

If Ur gona call me an SOB cr@ck rock, do it over here. Im not trying to dump on Lock's thread.

What are u ref. to now? The Halliburton Agenda D. Briody

Were U even aware Cheny was a blue collar worker setting up power lines?

KB&R aka the lions share of Halliburton. Formally Brown & Root the B&R in KB&R. Got federal money for A huge dam in Tx in several ways it didn't qualify for such $.
OK, maybe thats not enough. How about Tom Hanks "Huston we have a problem" in Apollo IIIX. hummm why would he say that. MAYBE because B&R are the reason mission control is located in HUSTON.

READ THE BOOK!!!

THIS WAS MAJORITY OF CORRUPTION THAT CAN ACCOUNTED FOR, IMO, HOW ABOUT B&R's MAIN CANDIDATE LBJ, HUMMM

So it's my understanding that it's Ur opinion JR. That VP Cheny was board member to a company who supported VP LBJ later to become prez LBJ.

It was suprizing how POed the Brown Brothers were when they got a VP and not a P.
U can tie them in as being oil men from Tx, but beyond that it's stretching it to say B jr went back in time to provoke LHO, or what ever Ur theory may be.

Must admit that was a good 1 though.

Thanx 4 the brain teez ;^)

The reason KB&R was used is because they are the last huge General Engineering construction firm in the USA and the only "qualified source". The other larger General Engineering and construction firms are Israeli and French and maybe two others in Europe. The down fall of major dams, nuclear power plants, major sewer systems and military bases killed the construction business for these super contractors.

You can say the environmentalist killed the manufacturing, mining, and major infrastructure industries in the USA. With no home base they become International businesses or they just fail like the auto industry and the steel industries. This leaves American worker little option but to work for the government servicing the rest of us.

So much for our high standard of life, the environmentalist have been trying to destroy and de-industrialize America for fifty years it appears they have succeeded.

Good point Lock. Should U decide to read the book please elaborate on why B&R received a federal contract to build a dam they weren't qualified to build, as their main thing was road construction @ the time. The author points to their, paid in full, rep LBJ. As for international projects a major military airport in Korea was constructed by KB&R, resulting in BIG BUCKS. Should we expect Halliburton to be the next company "too big to fail"?

Monopolization of big companies has the potential to bring this country to it's knees, IMO.

The K that merged with Brown and Root was an experienced dam, sewer plant, nuclear plant military hard target contractor. for that matter so was Brown and Root experienced in all those same areas. The reason they were building highways was that was the only work in the USA.

I believe you will find they built oil refineries, oil production facilities, air ports, ship ports, sewer plants around the world. So they were the only USA firm with the experience to do the job. There simply is not another Contractor that could bid to supply all the required services. There might be one other large General Engineering Co. in the USA, It was call Sante fe Engineering but I believe it was sold or merged also?

These are just more rumors from unqualified sources. Infrastructure contractors that can develop the teams to construct dams and major sewer plants and nuclear reactors along with oil factories are very few on the entire earth. The Chinese and Japanese have some Companies capable of these size project but they are booked up in China and India. The Europeans are busy building nuclear plants and wind mills.

I borrowed the book from the library about 2-3yr ago, so memory is what I have to go by.

The dam I am ref to was built way before the K was added, I am thinking it was when LBJ was still in the house of reps. The fix was in on that contract, as B&R had to resort to the competing bidders to even complete the contract. As for unqualified sources, how do U know if U haven't read the book. At least U do have knowledge of what I speak of which is more than anyone else has to say.
