What is Branding, anyway?

A brand is a collection of experiences, associations and symbols connected with a product, a service, a person or any other artifact or entity. Brands have become increasingly important components of culture and the economy, now being described as "cultural accessories and personal philosophies."

Some distinguish the psychological aspect of a brand from the experiential aspect. The experiential aspect consists of the sum of all points of contact with the brand and is known as the brand experience.

The psychological aspect, sometimes referred to as the brand image, is a symbolic construct created within the minds of people and consists of all the information and expectations associated with a product or service.

Organizations engaged in branding seek to develop or align the expectations behind the brand experience, creating the impression that a brand associated with a product or service has certain qualities or characteristics that make it special or unique. A brand is therefore one of the most valuable elements in an advertising theme, as it demonstrates what the brand owner is able to offer in the marketplace. The art of creating and maintaining a brand is called brand management.

An Open Letter to the RNC, NRSC, and NRCC

TO THE RNC, NRSC, AND THE NRCC:

We've had tea parties, formed 9-12 groups, held countless rallies across the nation, gone to town hall meetings and marched in masses on DC.  We've called, we've faxed and emailed, we’ve written letters on colored envelopes and postcards,  signed and delivered hundreds of petitions and read and researched legislative language til our eyes bled.  We have come together on websites all across the internet to connect with one another and share our thoughts, frustrations and ideas .  Why?  To deliver the message that we want to have our conservative principles and ideals revived, respected and brought to the forefront of the political debate.  To shout that we don't want our country fundamentally changed by the Marxist group of thugs who are currently employed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and the Capital Building.  To insist that our government become fiscally responsible, morally sane and allow the free market to function as it should.  We are demanding from Congress, on both sides of the aisle to honor the oath they took and  RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION.

Have we  been heard?  You betcha!   So much so that polling and pundits alike are now looking at 2010 as potentially a really big year for the GOP.  And why is that?  Well, because they assume (something one should never do), that we, the aforementioned Teaparty patriots and 9-12ers, are going to flock to the polls and vote for anyone with an "R" because we are so anxious to take the control from the liberals.  However, that is where they are wrong.  The time is long overdue for elites in the beltway and the leadership of the Republican Party to embrace our sentiment and return to the principles that once made the GOP a force to be reckoned with.

I watch amongst Conservatives the support for and the confidence in the GOP continue to erode; not just because of their past mistakes during the Bush years, but because of their continued mistakes now.  They don't seem to understand that we have no affinity for a party which continues to support candidates that don't support the Republican Party platform much less conservative principles.  The RNC, NRSC and NRCC just seem to continue to think that we need "moderate" (which equals "democrat lite") Republicans.  Gee, how did that work out for us in 2008?  They make this stupid kind of judgment even in areas where the electorate is running blood red.  The latest in this comedy of errors comes in NY District 23 with a candidate who seemingly belongs to the left not the right.

The candidate of choice in NY23 is Dede Scozzafava, who according to Michele Malkin (a reputable source amongst us Conservatives) says that Ms. Scozzafava is a "an ACORN-friendly, big labor-backing,  tax-and-spend radical in GOP clothing".  Her husband is a union boss, she's pro-choice and supports gay rights.  I'm just guessing on this one, but I bet she walks in lockstep with traitor Lindsey Graham and believes we need to "cure" global warming.  Her reputation is one of pro-taxation and support for liberal enterprises such as "card check".   (Gee, could that be the husband union boss thing?)  She has also garnered the respect of such reputable  publications like the Daily KOS.  Just right up the old Conservative alley, eh?  And this is the woman that the RNC has chosen to throw their money behind in lieu of the conservative candidate Doug Hoffman.  To add insult to this injury, now "Mr. Conservative When He Wants to Be" Newt Gingrich has endorsed her!

So, the question must be asked "When will the GOP get it?"  We don't want their moderate Republicans...we can vote for democrats and get the same.  We don't want compromise with the left or any of the bi-partisan reaching across the aisle to achieve legislation that "isn't as bad" as what the liberals offer.  If they want our vote, they will have to do much better than that, because what is at stake far exceeds "politics as usual".  This is about whether America, as she was founded, will survive.  "Moderate" (what a joke) Republican candidates and the RINOS, who currently hold office do us little good in this particular war.  We want people with spine, with courage and resolve to do the heavy lifting.  We crave representation by  men and women who are willing to put it all on the line for the preservation of a nation.  OUR NATION!  And while there are a few who are doing this, most still aspire with merely a politicians mindset...get re-elected and the people be damned

So, will the GOP get it?  I don't know.  They certainly act like they are listening to us when it serves their purpose, but they continue to make the same mistakes over and over and spit in the faces of the American people. Elephants have a reputation for having great recall, but these elephants seem to forget their promises and assurances within moments after they ask for your vote. Even more importantly, they forget what you said to them. My recommendation:  Lift up those big elephant ears and hear us, or pay the price of defeat.  The time is coming.

Hey! This looks like a great group! I've started a small group called Intellectual Rednecks. I see it as a way of rebranding. Check out my website at Intellectual Redneck .Com. Tomorrow I'm going to have a post called "Rednecks and Racists." And I'm going to post it on the Frederick Douglass network. Should be interesting. Talk about rebranding!

So sorry, Jim McGrody! Work got busy & I didn't realize you'd responded. Actually, I read your platform before I wrote my post.

Since this is a discussion board on re-branding the party, I assumed that your post was a suggestion of what our brand image should be & responded to that. If you were not suggesting an image solution, and just trying to get traffic to your blog, then hopefully I helped ;-)

Hello LauraS,

Thanks for your feedback. However, if you take the time to read my "platform" you will see that I stand for a cores set of principles. We may differ in some areas, but I stand on my core statements in each policy area.

Here is a link to my platform...

Hi Jim McGrody,
I understand that you are a Moderate Republican, and therefore your solution to the party's problems will be from that stance. However, history shows that moderation, compromise and "however's" in our platforms are erosive forces that weaken the platform, nullify our distinctives and make our candidates milk-toast redundancies. If we here are discussing the need to rebrand the party, then let's look at what the brand was when we failed (moderate/compromising/political) and what the brand has been when we've succeeded (conservative/strong/leadership). We lost the confidence of the American people when we eroded what we have historically stood for. We lost this election because we didn't own any important stance. We forfeited our place at the table when we handed over our opinions.

We provided no leadership, no philosophical ideals, nothing to believe in.
Now is not the time for more compromise. Now is not the time to run as the second-best liberal in the race. Now is the time to stand up and give people a true alternative. Now is the time to lead people in solutions that make them strong and independent and free, to submit a future that fosters hope in individuals rather than government, to put forth principles rather than polls. People want a leader, not a politician. People want something they can believe in, and a champion who inspires and leads the way. True conservatism resonates with the worldview and values of most Americans, but only a true conservative will inspire the passion needed to do great things.

Hey all...my first post.

Jeb Bush? Seriously? Why would he even be considered as a possible candidate if the goal is to set a new direction for the party?

Looking forward to the discussions here.

Onward,
JP

I agree 100% on the need for re-branding. I lamented all election season on how the Dems could appeal to the college crowd while we looked like we were an AARP ad! I am thrilled that younger faces are coming to the fore--Bobby Jindahl, Michael Steele, Sarah Palin, to name a few. As for Jeb....I think he's going to need a WHOLE LOT of re-branding. Right now, the name alone would lose it for him. Daddy didn't get a 2nd term and big brother, no matter how perfect he was in the 1st term, put us in the position we are in now due to his 2nd term.

Let's really get tis one going--the marketing of the party is sometimes, more important than the platform. Sad but true.

Viki,

Your points are right on take a look at sanford...who i would add to the top of the list

Hello Group,

Jim McGrody, Publisher and Editor of Plaintalk, is a Moderate Republican. Using the Plaintalk blog, he is attempting to develop an answer to the question, "What is a Moderate Republican?".

So, here is your chance. Click on the link below to collaborate with Jim in developing an answer. When participating think broadly. Think of this effort as constructing a company mission statement. Such statements guide the development of strategic policy, without getting bogged down in tactics . That will be for be another day.

Upon viewing the current version feel free to add your comments or request that additional policy statements be developed. Plaintalk reserves the right to incorporate such comments and policy statements in the final version. The goal is to have a working document in place to present to the newly-elected Chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). That election takes place at the end of this month.

Remember to be respectful. We might disagree but we should disagree - agreeably!
