Reagan was not doctrinally pure, neither was Goldwater, Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevel, Taft or Lincolln. The best conservative leaders were NEVER ideologically pure. Someone who is ideologically pure is not worth voting for. America is NOT 100% conse...

This is worth the time to read in its entirety. A fowl wind of doctrinal purity is blowing the house that Reagan built to "the four winds".

Texas State GOP Senators Forgot the Golden Rule Regarding the Voter ID Bill -- Jim McGrody Published in the San Antonio Express News

It is axiomatic that elections count and that our two-party system produces majority and minority parties in any given legislative body. Such bodies operate under constitutionally rigorous rules, regulations and parliamentary procedures that provide leadership status and legislative privileges to the majority party while simultaneously protecting the rights of the minority party.

To ensure bipartisan behavior, such rules should remain consistent, irrespective of the political churning of majori… Continue

Commentary on Texas Politics: The GOP Keeps Doing It to Itself!

Texas Senate Republicans rewrote the rules last week making an exception in the two-thirds rule to allow voter ID legislation on the floor with a simple majority. Historically, the two-thirds rule protects the minority faction in the Senate and has long ensured that it takes more than the simple majority to move legislation through the upper body.

I fear the consequences of this Republican action in the Texas Senate. It will come back to haunt the Party. And, if passed into law, I am sure that… Continue

GOP -- The Way Back

So what do we do? First, we eliminate checklists and litmus tests and focus on broad principles, not heavy-handed prescriptions. Free trade. Strong defense – at home and abroad. Government as small as is practicable in these times. Economic, education and energy policies that promote growth, energy independence and a competitive agenda that will allow businesses to grow and compete, not be protected by artificial barriers.

Dear Jim, Welcome in to RtP. Its always nice to see another active Texas member in here. I have a bunch of friends I work with in Boerne, so I know your area pretty well. I'm curious to see more of your position on the voter ID legislation. I have not gotten to reading that yet in its current version.

Mr. McGordy:

Sadly I do not agree with this philosophy. It will do nothing for the Republican party in 2010 and beyond. I will be happy to correspond with you and do wish to be added to your newsletter list.

Jim,

I read your post on what is a moderate Republican, & we're not that far from each other. Perhaps if we focus on what unites & not that which divides?

Jim,

I'm afraid I've given up for now on the Republican Party. I've been fighting for the party I believe it should be for decades now and I'm losing ground. This party hasn't learned its lessons and has a few more defeats ahead of it I'm afraid until it does. My interest would frankly be in forming a new more centrist party.

I would like to engage with you about moderate Republicanism. I blog daily at whatshouldbe.com. I think I was frustrated by my initial foray into this site with the rabid conservatism of so many. I have trouble getting beyond that. When I first became active in the party, the rabid conservatives were fringe but attempting a takeover. They've now taken over and we're the fringe.

Hey Jim, welcome to RtP. How do you define "moderate?"

Jim,

Welcome to RtP.

I look forward to working with you and all Republicans to return this nation to its conservative Republican background and return those states we lost back to the right color - Red.

Virginia, Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Iowa all former Red states. How is the time for grassroots Republicans to stand up for the right and fight for the basics the GOP has stood for.

The new Congress has been sworn in, but the results will be the same old agenda. Nothing new. Nancy, Harry and Barak will be feuding to see who is the boss of the Dem party. Now is the time for the Republican party to come together as the real party for change. Change to Real Conservative politics

Never give up, Never quit, Never fail, Always reaching, the GOP will be back.

Hi Jim,
I'm one of those that feel exactly the opposite.....I am working with others to bring the Republicans back to their conservstive principles, We stand for certain beliefs that cannot be compromised. That doesn't mean intolerance for other viewpoints and certainly the wish is to live peaceably with all. However,
one believes or doesn't believe in certain principles. Republicans should NOT be "Democrat-Lite". Obviously, THAT doesn't work for us at all.

I don't know if I agree with anything you stand for, but it is refreshing to hear different voices that speak well. Your blog is really well-done, and is definitely something more people here should pay attention to.
