Dan Riehl has a great synopsis of how the NRCC made such a mess in NY-23 by nominating a far leftist who has a meaningless "R" at the end of her name. No attention was given to her record or her substance. Voters, especially conservative voters, are not going to stand for candidates who do not share at least most of our values - definitely one who shares scant few. In this race, the true Republican candidate is Doug Hoffman, running on the conservative party ticket because of the mess made by out of touch party bosses.

Party leadership from the top on down must get in touch with the base to nominate candidates who share our values & principles if the Republican party is to be rebuilt.

I agree that the R's must go back to representing the ideas and beliefs the people who were and can again be, its base. Listening and taking advice from some of the "republicans" who post comment on RBT is like listening to the New Yark Tymes when selecting a presidential candidate.
We must demonstrate our philosophical differences between us and the marxist-socialist-democrats.
If the party is to survive, it must stop being "pragmatic" and take a stand no matter how much we are bashed in the mainstream obama controlled media.
Encourage support and vote for people like Ron Paul and Sarah Palin, people who have good, solid conservative beliefs and principles.
I know there are some here from the northeast corridor who believe that republican stands for marxist-socialist-democrat lite, to them I say good-bye and don't let the door hit you in your marxist-socialist-democrat ASS !!

Unless something really weird happens, Republicans should pick up seats in 2010. If we want it to be a "thumping," we need to run authentic conservatives. I've heard some commentators compare the current mood to that of 1992 - both parties are in the crosshairs. Simply being the other party is not going to be as dramatic, because of the lingering issues from the previous Republican majority. Our candidates need to positively & starkly differentiate themselves from the Democrats, & the way to do it is by espousing authentic conservative Republican principles & values via solutions. BTW - this has worked in the past & works whenever it's tried.

Robin you are right. The base needs to see conservatives not moderates sell outs. The base needs motivation to go vote. Moderates are voting for party elites hand picks and liberals are slamming us. Gingrich is a big sell out that has betrayed the base of this party. The base is the one that will come in big numbers in 2010 and 2012.
If we run moderates or liberals republicans then there is no diffrence between us and them. Independents will vote democrat like they did in 2006 and 2008.
