Sacramento is the Capitol of the once "Golden State"
The recent closing of the
tent city was the subject of national news coverage.
As our country is struggling to rehabilitate the banking and credit system at a cost of trillions-of-dollars Americans that, at best, made $360 a week when they were employed and having lost their jobs as a result of the turmoil in the financial and stock markets are not "above the fold" stories.
Homelessness is not a "Republican Issue," but it should be.
Taking action on homelessness could be a "Nixon travels to China" moment for the Republican Party. In the Sacramento area there are 10.4% percent of the rental units unoccupied and 4.8% of 4.8% of "owned units" vacant, yet there are thousands of homeless with there numbers increasing everyday.
Those vacant apartments and condos are lost income for their owners, keeping in mind that many Americans attended "Get rich by investing in real estate seminars" and are counting on their rental property income for funding their retirement. The empty rentals also lower property values and the devaluation of assessed value is going to cause decreasing tax collections by cities across the US in coming months worsening their already dire budget situations.
Many housing tracts have become ghost towns and are owned by banks that arranged loans through quasi-government agencies "Fannie and Freddie" that we have been hearing about lately. If the Republicans in the Congress could come-up with a plan to use some of the available
"Housing Stock" to alleviate the misery in Sacramento and other mid-size cities in America that would be a
