An Iranian American recently said this:

“The bottom line right now is whose violence threshold is higher? How much are the hard-liners willing to inflict to suppress the population and tell yet another generation to shut up? And how much are Moussavi and his supporters willing to stand to fulfill their dreams? It sounds so inhuman, but that’s what it comes down to. It’s very scary.”

Iran itself is a Paradox. For those of you who shout 'Bomb Bomb Iran' need to know that this Green Revolution is primarily coming from the Young, Urbanites of Iran as well as a smattering of others and conservatives who are outtraged at this blatant flaunt of Democracy.
If this was some other country besides Iran the US could get away with providing support for the Green Revolutionaries, but this is a country that for decades has spewed the most hateful of Anti-Americanism. Anything we did could be and has been shown in abad light by the government to sway the citizenry. Iranians, especially young Iranains love American culture-music, technology, etc etc but hate-hate the US government especially under Bush though with Obama taking the reigns the hate has eased off but their are many who are still suspicious.
The Theocratic Gov of Khamenei is still very much in power though due to their efforts his legitamacy HAS been weakened. That Mousavi is still alive is a testiment. Now quite recently even Ahmadinejhad and Khamenei are having a fall out not only that but Ahmadinejhad now faces a deeply fractured up government (many of his allies not liking how the protests went down) one that will be hard pressed to deal with economic troubles and the US's continued pressure.
The Green Revolution is not over its still ongoing all because of the Iranians. I wish them all good luck!

If we claim to uphold the ideals of democracy and liberty, we better uphold them ALL over the world, not just here. If we cannot uphold values of liberty in Iran, then we have NO reason to uphold liberty in America. You either support liberty or you don'rt. Non-interventionism is for hypocrits on this issue.

Sure, Uburalus the perfect RP line.

What is going on in Iran will have two results. One is that it essentially succeeds and either gradually or immediately the mullahs and alloyatolahs lose power and Iran becomes a democracy, essentially ending the threat of Hezbollah and Hamas. The other result is the revolution is crushed and if that happens millions will die as a response by the govt. If the protests are crushed then most likely the regime will tigthen up even more, nothing will change, the US will get nothing out of Iran and war with Israel will likely begin. We should all pray that what is happening in Iran is a harbinger of the first result and not the second. We all should stand in solidarity with the protestors, I do.

While I'am all for anyone that is fighting for liberty I do not believe we have any business intervening with Iran's problems, the mullahs are in power because we intervened and displaced one leader in favor of the one we preferred. Show me where in the Constitution the government is allowed to intervene in other countries' affairs using our money. We have enough of our own homegrown problems without going abroad to search them out.

And isn't it interesting that Americans won't even hit the streets while facing even more dire problems....

I would hope that Iran is at a crossroads. The presidential office is window dressing for the mad mullahs who run that country. True change to Iran will only come when the mullahs are out of power, & I fear that will take an armed uprising that our current administration would not support.

Obama doesn't want to be seen as "meddling." Is it meddling to come to someone's aid if that person is being attacked? We remember the sickening incident, I think in NYC, where a woman was brutalized, raped, & murdered. Many people heard her cries for help, but didn't "meddle."

Moderates in Iran are life savers for Obama. If Almadinejah prevails, expect a Israel-Iran conflict by September. This could be Jimmy Carter part 2 at its finest.
